Hotel laundry vs street laundry vs pickup service in Bali

Staying in a Bali hotel or villa, you have three ways to get laundry done: the hotel's laundry desk, the kiloan laundry down the street, or a service that collects from your door. They differ far more in what happens to your clothes than in what you pay. Here is the honest comparison.

Three options, three very different processes

The hotel laundry desk, the kiloan on the corner, and a pickup service all end with a folded pile. What happens in between is what you are actually choosing.

Hotel laundry: convenient, expensive, and a mystery

Hotel laundry looks like the premium option because of the price. It usually is not. Most hotels outside the top tier outsource laundry to a contractor who processes many properties at once. The form you fill in goes to a desk; your clothes go into a bulk process you never see.

Per-item pricing is the real issue. A shirt at 80,000 IDR, trousers at 100,000, a dress at 150,000: three days of clothes cost more than a night in many villas. And express, which is what you need when you notice the empty drawer at 7 pm, doubles it.

Where hotel laundry wins: a single shirt back by dinner, or when you simply do not want to think about it and the budget is not a concern.

Street kiloan: cheap for a reason

The kiloan laundry down the street from your villa in Seminyak will wash a week of clothes for the price of a smoothie bowl. For gym clothes, sarongs and holiday t-shirts, that is a fair deal.

The reason it is cheap is the process: several customers' clothes in one machine, one hot cycle, one hot dryer, no inspection, strong powder. That is how whites go grey, prints crack and elastic dies. Items also go missing, because nothing is counted and bags are matched by memory. If you go this route, photograph the pile first and read what to do if a laundry loses or ruins your clothes before you need it.

Where street laundry wins: backpacker budgets and clothes with no future.

Pickup full service: the middle price, the top process

A full-service pickup laundry charges per kilogram like a kiloan but works like a good hotel laundry should. At TRAST that means 100,000 IDR per kg with free pickup from your villa gate or hotel reception, every item inspected and sorted, stains treated under a guarantee, fabrics dried the way their labels ask, steam ironing, and everything back in 24 hours.

For a guest, the effort is one message and a bag left at reception. For a week of clothes, it costs a third of hotel laundry and buys a process the hotel cannot show you. Our pickup and delivery page explains how the handover works at hotels and resorts from Nusa Dua to Ubud.

Where pickup service wins: everything except a single shirt needed in two hours.

For villa guests: the practical version

If you are in a villa for a week or more, the choice is simple. The villa machine is usually old, smells of damp and has no dryer, so drying on the terrace takes a day and a half in the humidity. A weekly bag out the gate solves all of it. Sheets and towels can go in the same bag; see bed linen and towels.

If the villa has staff who "do laundry", ask how: often it means the household machine and the rail, which is fine for beach towels and not for a silk dress.

For villa hosts: the numbers change

Hosts think in sets, not shirts. A two-bedroom villa turnover is two sheet sets, four to six bath towels, pool towels, bathmats and kitchen cloths: 8–12 kg per changeover. At street prices that is cheap and comes back grey, thin and faintly damp within a few months, which shows up in reviews. At hotel-style per-item prices it is unworkable.

Per-kg full service with pickup is the model that fits: predictable cost per turnover, sheets and towels washed hot and dried fully, and a driver who knows the gate. Hosts can also count on the same process for guests who ask "where can I do laundry", which is a question every villa gets. See TRAST for villas and hotels for how regular pickups work.

The decision in one paragraph

One shirt, tonight: the hotel desk. A week of clothes you do not care about, on a tight budget: the kiloan. Anything you want to wear next year, a family's worth of laundry, or a villa that needs sheets to stay white: a pickup full service. The price difference between the last two is a coffee a day; the difference in what comes back is the whole point.

FAQ

Hotel, street or pickup laundry — quick answers

How much does hotel laundry cost in Bali?

Hotels charge per item, typically 40,000–120,000 IDR for a shirt and more for dresses and trousers. A week of clothes for one person easily reaches 700,000–1,500,000 IDR, and express service can double it.

Will a hotel let an outside laundry pick up from reception?

In most cases, yes. Leave the bag at reception with your name and room number and tell us who to ask for. Some resorts prefer the pickup to happen at the lobby entrance; we handle that in chat.

Is street laundry safe for good clothes?

For gym clothes and things you do not mind wearing out, yes. For linen, whites and anything with a care label, the mixed loads and hot drying are a real risk.

What does TRAST charge for hotel or villa guests?

The same as everyone: 100,000 IDR per kg, 150,000 IDR per pair of shoes, minimum order 200,000 IDR, free pickup and delivery in all Bali areas, ready in 24 hours.
