Why shoes in Bali need real cleaning, not a wipe

A pair of sneakers that spends one week in Bali picks up more than a year of city dirt. Red volcanic dust from the roads of Canggu and Pererenan settles into canvas. Beach sand works into the seams. Rain on a scooter soaks the midsole, and the humidity means nothing dries fully overnight, which is where the smell starts.

A quick wipe at the villa moves the dirt around. Throwing shoes into a washing machine breaks glue, warps soles and leaves a grey tide-line. So we clean shoes the way they should be cleaned: by hand, one pair at a time, with the right method for the material.

What we clean

• Sneakers and trainers — canvas, mesh, knit, leather and mixed uppers. White sneakers are our speciality.
• Sandals and slides — footbeds, straps and the sweat marks that build up in tropical heat.
• Leather shoes and boots — cleaned and conditioned so the leather does not dry out after washing.
• Suede and nubuck — brushed and spot-treated without soaking.
• Kids' shoes, running shoes, gym shoes — anything that lives in a Bali wardrobe.

How we clean each pair

1. Inspection. We check the material, the sole, loose stitching and any stains that need special treatment.
2. Dry cleaning first. Dust and dried sand are brushed off before any water touches the shoe, so dirt is not pushed into the fabric.
3. Laces and insoles out. They are cleaned separately, which is the only way to actually remove the smell.
4. Hand cleaning. Upper, midsole and outsole are cleaned with a soft brush and the products we use across the whole laundry: no chlorine, no optical brighteners, no harsh solvents.
5. Deodorising. The inside of the shoe is treated so it comes back fresh, not perfumed.
6. Slow drying in shape. No hot dryers. Shoes dry in shape with airflow, which protects the glue and keeps the sole straight.
